Adapting a complex platform to a fully functional mobile experience without sacrificing usability and design

Translating a complex, desktop-based clinical platform into a fast, intuitive mobile experience, driven by user demand for on-the-go access to essential patient data.

Challenges

Transform complex, metadata-rich desktop workflows into a lean, mobile-first MVP, by simplifying hover-dependent interactions, restructuring dense data, and adapting navigation for touch.

Decluttering the Interface:
Driving Clarity Reached 100% Task Success

One of the main challenges identified during user testing was user confusion around selecting list items and accessing comments or attachments due to a cluttered interface.

By simplifying the UI, hiding secondary actions, and adding clear selection cues, usability improved from 63% to 100% success rate.

Prioritized Information Hierarchy
in List Items

I restructured each list item by analyzing hierarchy from both desktop usage and common mobile list management patterns.
Essential metadata was surfaced, while extended info was placed in collapsible sections – minimizing noise and maximizing usability.

Interaction-Driven Function Reveal

On mobile, functions previously visible by default (or via hover) are now revealed only after tapping on the list item, reducing visual clutter and cognitive load.

Replacing Hover with Tap-Accessible Icons

Functions like sort previously activated via hover icon on desktop, were redesigned as buttons that appear directly in contextual pages.

DICOM Image Viewer Optimization

DICOM thumbnails are displayed in the case view, and users can tap a maximize icon to expand the image into a full-screen viewer with gestures for zoom and pan.

Consolidated Navigation for Side Panels

The desktop left panel tabs were transformed into a navigation button, opening a full-screen modal related views – maintaining functionality while adapting to mobile screen constraints.

Outcome Highlights

  • Users reported increased confidence performing tasks on mobile during rounds or off-site.

  • Mobile engagement grew steadily after Phase 1, validating the phased release model.

  • Positive feedback centered on the clarity of information, ease of sharing, and low-friction access to DICOM content.
 

Reflection

Adapting a complex, clinical-grade platform to mobile taught me the value of progressive simplification:
not everything needs to move at once, but every move needs to feel intentional.
By anchoring design decisions in real user behavior and leveraging common mobile UX patterns, I was able to deliver a tool that works where users are not just where their desktop is.
