UX Overhaul Boosts usability to 94% on a data ecosystem platform

This project demonstrates how small interface decisions can dramatically impact the usability of complex systems

Overview

This project was driven by user feedback and focused on redesigning a clinical platform to enhance case management and collaboration.
Quentry enables users to view patient lists, access detailed case records, and create real-time collaboration around each patient.

Usability testing revealed a 94% success rate on the redesigned desktop experience,
compared to 84% on the previous version, demonstrating an improvement in usability and user comprehension

Challenges

Improve platform usability and workflow clarity for medical professionals by reducing visual clutter, streamlining key interactions like patient navigation and collaboration, and organizing content for quick information retrieval.
The design needed to balance UX improvements with user familiarity, integrate uploads seamlessly into workflows, and support secure, flexible image-sharing without adding complexity.

User Research & Insights

I interviewed key user groups to identify workflow and collaboration challenges, then involved them in multiple rounds of usability testing. This real-world feedback guided iterative design improvements, helping to avoid assumptions and address root issues.
After four testing rounds, the final design achieved a 94% success rate and was moved to production.

Contextual Actions Based on Selection

Previously, all patient-level functions were displayed in the UI at once, with only some being active depending on the context.

This led to confusion and visual overload.
I redesigned the patient list so that relevant actions appear only when a list item (patient or case) is selected-streamlining the experience and reducing decision fatigue.

Hotizontal Folder Layout

Users complained that the vertical structure of patient folders forced them to scroll excessively to see all contents.

I replaced the vertical list with a horizontal content view, allowing faster scanning and easier access to folder items across different case types and modalities.

Removing the Right Panel for Cleaner Navigation

In the original design, a permanent sidebar cluttered the interface and compressed content.
I replaced it with a hover-activated “Info” icon that opens a clean overlay panel for patient details, freeing screen space, stabilizing the layout, and improving usability by showing information only when needed.

Unified Flow for Adding New Patients

Uploading new patient data was previously separated into a different tab, making the flow fragmented and unintuitive.

I eliminated the separate tab and introduced a clear “Upload” button directly within the main view, embedding the upload action in its natural context.

Outcome Highlights

While post-launch metrics are still being gathered, internal reviews and early feedback indicate the redesign:

  • Reduced time to locate and act on patient data.

  • Eliminated user complaints about the disruptive panel behavior.

  • Increased clarity and confidence in sharing and uploading workflows.

  • Received praise for the streamlined, context-aware UI interactions.

Reflection

This project reinforced how small interface decisions, like when and where to show actions, can dramatically impact the usability of complex systems like medical data platforms.

Listening closely to user's frustrations led to simple but meaningful structural changes that make the platform more intuitive, efficient, and trustworthy.
